England exchange 2011
Below I write about the daily routines of our stay in England in March 2011. I would say that this exchange was a great and valuable experience, which we will never forget.
Monday, 14th March:
On Monday we met the others at Frankfurt Airport. We checked in and at 11.15 am we took off for London Heathrow. After a good flight with British Airways, a bus took us to Kennet School in Thatcham near Newbury. It’s much bigger than Melibokusschule! Somebody showed us a room, where we had to wait for our exchange partners. We were all happy when they came and picked us up to go to their homes. So everybody spent the rest of the day in his family.
Tuesday, 15th March:
We stayed in school with our exchange partners all day, so we got a good impression of their school life, lessons and teachers. In the first two lessons all the Germans were met by the head teacher Mr. Dick. After that our partners picked us up to their lessons. At 15.30 am the school was finished and we spent the rest of the day again with our partners.
Our trip to Thatcham Wednesday, 16th March:
This was the day to visit Oxford. We all (German and English) met at school and took the bus. There we went to Christ Church College, one of the largest colleges in the University of Oxford . Part of the university is a very big and old-fashioned dinner hall which is used as a setting in the “Harry Potter” films! Later we did a guided tour of Oxford Castle. It was a prison until 1996, now it is frequently used as a location for films. After the visit we had time for ourselves and were allowed to go shopping.
Thursday, 17th March:
We met at school and then we walked together to the train station and took a train to London. There we changed to the Underground and at Victoria Station we started our “Original London Sightseeing Tour“ with one of the famous open red double-decker buses which took us straight to “Madame Tussauds”. It was very windy and cold.
We got in touch with Royalties, TV celebrities and sports stars, took a lot of photos and learned something about the making of the wax figures. After a little wait we took the bus again.
Friday, 18th March:
On Friday we took the train to Windsor, where we visited the famous Windsor Castle. Inside it is really awesome and the castle is the official residence of the Queen. Unfortunately, we didn‘t meet her.
After that we went through the St George’s Chapel and then we had time for ourselves and most of us decided to go shopping again.
Saturday/Sunday, 19th/20th March:
At the weekend we spent the whole time with our families. Most of us made some tours in the Thatcham area. The next stop was at “Big Ben”. There we started a riverFor example some of us went ice-skating, bowling, into a fun park or visited friends.
Monday, 21st March:
Monday was our second school day. It was interesting again, but it was like school last week, so I do not write much about it.
Tuesday, 22th March:
It was our last day in England and we were beginning to feel a little sad, because nobody wanted to leave. Today we visited Reading. First we went in a museum and after that we had a lot of time for shopping. In the evening was the 30th Anniversary Celebration (cf. extra report).
Wednesday, 23rd March:
Now it was time to leave our partners and most of us were not very happy about that. After the third lesson we went outside and said goodbye to them. Then all Germans got on the bus, so we could go tov Heathrow Airport. In Frankfurt our parents picked us up and we all looked forward to seeing our partners again.

On Wednesday, 4th May 2011 the English exchange students arrived at Frankfurt Airport. They were picked up by their host families and spent the rest of the day with them.
The next day we had a normal school day with our exchange partners. It was strange for them to have to start school so early.
On Friday the English students made a trip to Frankfurt, where they visited the Goethehaus and the Main Tower.
At the weekend we all spent the time with our exchange partners to do individual things. Monday was another school day. The English students did some little presentations in various classes. In the evening we all met at school again to celebrate 30 years school exchange between Melibokusschule and Kennet School. The following morning we all took the train to Heidelberg and spent a nice day visiting the castle where we also did a rallye.
The next two days the English group went out alone visiting Mannheim and Darmstadt.
On the last evening we all met in Bensheim to go bowling, we had a great time. The same evening it was already time to say good-bye to everyone because they had to leave early the following morning while we were at school. We all had a good time together and this exchange was a very good experience.

In diesem Jahr konnten die Melibokusschule und die Kennet School aus Thatcham ihr 30-jähriges Austauschjubiläum feiern. Und das taten sie dann gleich zweimal - zunächst in England zum Abschluss des Besuchs im März. Mr. Dick, Leiter der Kennet School, begrüßte dazu alle aktuellen Austauschteilnehmer und die begleitenden Lehrkräfte sowie mit Mervyn Else einen der beiden Gründerväter des Austusches. Er war besonders stolz, dass sein „Baby“ mittlerweile auf ein so langes, erfolgreiches Leben zurückblicken kann. Gehegt und gepflegt wird es inzwischen seit vielen Jahren vor allem von Linda Page, der Fachbereichsleiterin für moderne Fremdsprachen, sowie von Mark Hewitt, der seit den 90er Jahren immer wieder als Organisator und Begleiter aktiv ist. Mr. Dick lobte in seiner Ansprache das Engagement aller Lehrkräfte und Schüler auf beiden Seiten, die den Austausch seit so vielen Jahren nutzen, um die Sprache, die Kultur und die Menschen des jeweiligen Gastlandes kennen zu lernen. Zum Schluss überreichte er der deutschen Gruppe einen Gedenkteller für die heimische Vitrine.

Eine besondere Aufwertung erhielt die Veranstaltung durch den Besuch des Bürgermeisters von Newbury, der seinen Town Caller mitbrachte. Dieser wurde aufgrund seiner Uniform schnell ein gefragtes Fotomotiv. Nach dem Verzehr der kunstvollen Jubiläumstorte verzogen sich die meisten Jungen zum deutsch-englischen Fußballduell nach draußen, die anderen saßen bei Musik und Snacks zusammen. Die meisten trugen dabei die Jubiläums-T-Shirts mit dem oben abgebildeten Motiv, das wir allen als Gastgeschenk mitgebracht hatten.Beim Gegenbesuch der englischen Austauschgruppe aus Thtacham fand dann der zweite Teil der Jubiläumsfeierlichkeiten statt. Am 9. Mai fand dazu in unserer festlich geschmückten Cafeteria eine große Party statt, an der neben der Schülergruppe (teilweise begleitet von ihren Eltern) auch ne große Zahl an Lehrkräften teilnahm, die in den vergangenen 30 Jahren aktiv am Austausch mit der Kennet School beteiligt waren.
Allen voran seien hier Hans-Jürgen Schmidt, unser ehemaliger Schulleiter und zweiter Gründervater des Austauschs, sowie Monika Keller genannt, die über 20 Jahre lang dieFahrten mit viel Herzblut organisierte. Sie fungierte auch dieses Mal als Gastgeberin, und zwar für ihr englisches „Pendant“ Linda Page, die eigens für die Jubiläumsfeier angereist war. Wie bereits zwei Monate zuvor fanden beide Seiten viele lobende Worte für das gemeinsame Projekt und drückten den Wunsch aus, diese Tradition noch mindestens weitere 30 Jahre fortsetzen zu wollen.
Frau Föhr überreichte zahlreiche Blumensträuße, während Frau Zavazal und Herr Volkart Jubiläumstassen, T-Shirts und weitere Geschenke verteilten. Auch der Alsbacher Bürgermeister Georg Rausch ließ es sich nicht nehmen, allen Beteiligten zu diesem Anlass persönlich zu gratulieren.
Im zweiten Teil der Veranstaltung fand u.a. ein Quiz statt, bei dem die „perfect partners“ unter den Austauschteilnehmern ermittelt wurden. Wer hatte seine Partnerin bzw. seinen Partner am besten kennen gelernt? Überlegene Siegerinnen wurden dabei Ines Braitsch und Rebecca Stewart! Ein riesiges Buffet und die musikalische Untermalung durch DJ Markus Rapp waren die weiteren Attraktionen dieser gelungenen Feier. Ein besonderes Dankeschön gilt an dieser Stelle den Eltern für ihre tatkräftige Unterstützung!
